Do you need a degree to be a blockchain developer?

I want to pursue blockchain development but don’t have a CS degree. Is formal education required or can skills be self-taught?

A degree isn’t mandatory to become a blockchain developer. Many developers enter through self-learning, online courses, and open-source contributions. What matters most is strong knowledge of programming, smart contracts, cryptography concepts, and hands-on project experience. Certifications and portfolio work can help prove skills when applying for blockchain roles.

Companies do value degrees, especially for security-focused roles, but the blockchain industry is still skill-driven. If you can demonstrate practical expertise with Solidity, Node.js, or Ethereum tooling, you can get hired without formal education. Hackathons, GitHub projects, and community involvement often replace traditional credentials.
